Frequently asked questions
Getting Started
What is a URL shortener?
A URL shortener turns a long web address into a short, easy-to-share link. Long To Short URL goes further — every short URL is a short link that records each click with referral source, city-level location, device, browser, and UTM campaign data, viewable in your analytics dashboard.
How does URL shortening work?
You paste a long URL and we assign it a short, unique link. When someone clicks that short link, they are redirected to your destination while the visit is logged for analytics. Because the redirect runs through our platform, you can update advanced settings under one dashboard without changing the link you shared.
What is Long To Short URL?
Long To Short URL is a link management and QR code platform with real-time analytics. You can create trackable short URLs, generate dynamic QR codes with custom designs, and view detailed click and scan data — all from a single dashboard.
How does click tracking work?
Every time someone clicks a short link or scans a dynamic QR code, Long To Short URL logs the event with referral source, city-level geographic location, device type, browser, and timestamp. Each one appears in your analytics reports and in the event log.
What makes a short link different from a regular short URL?
A regular short URL simply redirects. A short link captures click-level analytics every time it is used — referral source, geo-location, device, browser, and precise timing. Short links also support UTM campaigns, traffic-source classification, and integrated dynamic QR codes, making them suitable for marketing and time-sensitive campaigns.
Do I need technical skills to use Long To Short URL?
No. The platform is designed for non-technical users. Paste a long URL to create a short link, use the visual editor to design QR codes, and view your analytics on a pre-built dashboard. Most tasks take less than a minute.
Short Links
How many short links can I create on each plan?
The Free plan includes 1 short link, Starter 10 short links, Pro 100 short links and Enterprise unlimited short links. All plans include the same click tracking and analytics reports, and each short link comes with a matching dynamic QR code.
How do I create a short URL?
Sign in, open Short links, paste the long URL and give it a name — the short link and its QR code are created straight away. Share it across email, social media, print or any other channel, add UTM parameters to the link to tell channels apart, and monitor clicks from your analytics dashboard.
Can I track QR code scans and short link clicks in the same view?
Yes. The analytics dashboard aggregates data from both short links and QR codes into a single interface. You can compare click and scan performance across all your campaigns and filter by date range — all in one place.
QR Codes
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
Static QR codes encode the destination URL directly into the code pattern and cannot be changed once generated. Dynamic QR codes point to a redirect URL on our platform, allowing you to update the destination at any time without reprinting. Dynamic codes also provide detailed scan analytics including count, location, device, and timing.
Can I add my logo and customise QR code designs?
Yes. You can embed your logo in the centre of the code, choose dot and corner styles (such as square, rounded, dots and classy), set colours or gradients, add a frame, and download the code as PNG, JPEG or SVG. Designs can be saved as reusable templates.
What scan data do dynamic QR codes provide?
Dynamic QR codes log every scan with location (city and country), device type (mobile, tablet, desktop), operating system, and timestamp. The analytics dashboard shows scan trends over time, peak engagement hours, and geographic distribution.
Are there size or resolution recommendations for printing QR codes?
For print, use at least 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 inches) at 300 DPI, and leave a quiet margin around the code. Set the size in the editor before downloading: PNG, JPEG and SVG downloads are all rendered at that size, so for posters and banners choose a large size rather than scaling a small file up.
UTM & Campaign Tracking
What UTM parameters are supported?
All five standard UTM parameters: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content. Add them to the short link's address when you share it (for example ?utm_source=newsletter) and they are recorded with every click, so one short link can be tagged differently in each channel. QR code scans are tagged automatically.
How do short UTM aliases work?
Short UTM aliases let you use abbreviated parameter names (s, m, cam, t, con) instead of the full standard names. This keeps your tracking URLs shorter and cleaner — especially useful for QR codes and social media bios — while maintaining full analytics compatibility.
Can I track campaigns across multiple platforms?
Yes. Create unique short links with different UTM parameters for each platform — Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, email newsletters, WhatsApp, paid search, influencer partnerships — and compare their performance side by side in the analytics dashboard.
Analytics & Attribution
What analytics data is available for my links and QR codes?
The analytics dashboard provides click and scan counts, UTM campaign breakdowns, traffic source attribution, city-level geo-location mapping, device and browser details, operating system, screen size, network/ISP insights, and bot detection. New clicks and scans are included the next time you load a report.
How quickly does analytics data appear in the dashboard?
Clicks and scans are recorded as they happen and are included the next time you load or refresh a dashboard or report page.
What device and browser information is captured?
Every click and scan logs the device type (mobile, desktop, tablet), device brand and model, operating system and version, browser and version, screen width and height, and language settings. This helps you understand exactly how your audience accesses your content.
Can I see network and ISP information for my visitors?
Yes. Each event includes the visitor's internet service provider (ISP), autonomous system number (ASN) and ASN name, plus the connection speed class (4G, 3G or 2G) when the visitor's browser reports it. This gives you visibility into the network environment of your audience.
Bot Detection & Traffic Quality
Does the platform detect bot traffic?
Yes. Our system automatically identifies known bots and crawlers by analysing user agent strings and behaviour patterns. Each bot is identified by name and assigned a confidence score. Suspicious traffic is flagged so you can filter it from your analytics.
How does IP reputation scoring work?
Every visitor receives an IP reputation score from 0-100 based on heuristics. The score is reduced for known proxy, VPN, TOR exit node, and datacenter IP addresses. This helps you assess the quality of your traffic and identify potentially fraudulent clicks.
Can I detect VPN and proxy traffic?
Yes. The platform identifies VPN, proxy, TOR, and datacenter IP addresses for every click and scan. These signals are clearly marked in your analytics data so you can evaluate traffic quality and filter as needed.
Pricing & Account
Is there a free plan available?
Yes. The Free plan includes 1 short link and 1 QR code with every analytics report — at no cost and with no card required. Paid plans raise the limits: Starter has 10 short links and 10 QR codes, Pro 100 short links and 100 QR codes, and Enterprise unlimited short links. All plans include the same analytics features.
Are short URLs safe to click?
Like any shortened link, ours hide the destination. Short links from the platform are served over HTTPS and can be disabled at any time. For your own safety, hover over unfamiliar short links to preview the destination, and our analytics include bot and VPN/proxy/TOR detection so you can distinguish real visitors from automated or low-quality traffic.
What happens when I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
Plan changes — up or down, and between monthly and yearly billing — take effect immediately with prorated billing: unused time on your old plan is credited against the new one. Existing links and QR codes keep working after any change; if you are above a lower plan's limit, you can't create new ones until you're back under it.
Is my data retained if I cancel my subscription?
Yes. Your short links, QR codes, and analytics data are retained after cancellation. Your links keep redirecting and your reports stay available on the Free plan; if you have more links than the Free plan allows, you can't create new ones until you delete some or subscribe again.
Can I have multiple users on my account?
Accounts are individual — each user manages their own short links, QR codes, and analytics dashboard. If your team needs shared access or you are evaluating Enterprise, contact our support team and we will help you find the right setup.
